What The Vibes Are
What It’s About
Fall in love, break the curse.
Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year, Prince Rhen, the heir of Emberfall, thought he could be saved easily if a girl fell for him. But that was before he turned into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. Before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.
Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, Harper learned to be tough enough to survive. When she tries to save a stranger on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s pulled into a magical world.
Break the curse, save the kingdom.
Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. A prince? A curse? A monster? As she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.
What I thought about it
***Possible Spoilers below
Brigid Kemmerer’s A Curse So Dark and Lonely was a modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast with a very different twist than the story we all know and love. Although set in the present, we were transported to a world filled with magic and mystery.
Harper was a high school senior who struggled to make ends meet as her ailing mother fought cancer and her brother worked as an enforcer for the mob to pay off their father’s debts. While standing watch, Harper witnessed a young man kidnapping a woman, so in an effort to save the woman, Harper jumped on him and accidentally got herself transported to a magical land during the struggle.
Welcome to Emberfall, guys.
Disoriented and confused, Harper found herself in Rhen’s castle. Prince Rhen of Emberfall was the last of his line and the sole heir to the throne. Cursed by a sorceress named Lilith, Rhen was forced to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth birthday over and over again, never aging a day, until he finds a woman who would love him. When Autumn ended, Rhen was transformed into a creature that seeks to achieve only one goal. Destroy.
Filled with witches, magic, and love, Kemmerer’s first installment of the A Curse So Dark and Lonely series sucks you in and doesn’t let go until the story is told. Absolutely amazing novel!
