Into the Buffyverse

by

2–3 minutes

Kiersten White’s Slayer dived into the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and followed Athena, daughter of Buffy’s first Watcher, as she dealt with the implications of being a Slayer. Set shortly after the TV show’s series finale, White re-exposed the world to the Buffyverse from a whole new perspective. Decent read.

What The Vibes Are

What It’s About

Into every generation a Slayer is born…

Nina and her twin sister, Artemis, are far from normal. It’s hard to be when you grow up at the Watcher’s Academy, which is a bit different from your average boarding school. Here, teens are trained as guides for Slayers—girls gifted with supernatural strength to fight the forces of darkness. But while Nina’s mother is a prominent member of the Watchers’ Council, Nina has never embraced the violent Watcher lifestyle. Instead, she follows her instincts to heal, carving out a place for herself as the school medic.

Until the day Nina’s life changes forever.

Thanks to Buffy, the famous (and infamous) Slayer that Nina’s father died protecting, Nina is not only the newest Chosen One—she’s the last Slayer, ever. Period.

As Nina hones her skills with her Watcher-in-training, Leo, there’s plenty to keep her occupied: a monster fighting ring, a demon who eats happiness, a shadowy figure that keeps popping up in Nina’s dreams…

But it’s not until bodies start turning up that Nina’s new powers will truly be tested—because someone she loves might be next.

One thing is clear: Being Chosen is easy. Making choices is hard.

Kiersten White’s Slayer dived into the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and followed Athena, daughter of Buffy’s first Watcher, as she dealt with the implications of being a Slayer. Set shortly after the TV show’s series finale, Watchers were now almost extinct and were hiding out in Ireland.

Athena and Artemis were identical twins raised by the Watchers. After the death of their father, who died saving Buffy, the girls and their mother grew to hate all Slayers. So when Athena was revealed to be the Last Slayer ever, her family denied her new destiny and forbade her from training. Having lived in Artemis’s shadow her whole life, Athena began to break out of her shell with the help of her own Watcher (and love interest), Leo.

When Athena began to have visions of the deaths of those close to her, it was up to her and her friends to figure out who or what was killing them and why. Faced with so many emotional and physical obstacles, Athena learned to accept who she was and embraced it, despite the opinions of others.

Written beautifully and correctly, White re-exposed the world to the Buffyverse from a whole new perspective. The character arcs were so perfectly written that you will love, hate, and feel for even the demons of this story. Bravo, White! Bravo!
