What It’s About
A compulsively readable debut with a narrator who can’t be trusted, perfect for fans of Natasha Preston.
When she was a child, Cassidy Pratt accidentally started a fire that killed her neighbor. She’s pretty sure she didn’t mean to do it, and she’d give anything to forget that awful day. But her town’s bullies, particularly the cruel and beautiful Melody Davenport, have never let her live it down. In Melody’s eyes, Cassidy is a murderer and always will be.
Then Melody goes missing, and Cassidy thinks she may have information about what happened. She knows she should go to the cops, but she recently joked about how much she’d like to get rid of Melody. She even planned the perfect way to do it. And then she gets a chilling text from an unknown number: I’m so glad we’re in this together.
Now it’s up to Cassidy to figure out what’s really going on before the truth behind Melody’s disappearance sets the whole town ablaze.

Another family member who thinks they know best…. UGH

What I thought about it
***Possible Spoilers below
As a young girl, Cassidy was involved in a house fire that killed her childhood best friend. The only reason she survived was that her older brother, Asher, pulled her out in time. Rumors spread that she was responsible and quickly became the town’s outcast and resident “pyro.”
Shortly after, Gideon moved to town, and Cassidy quickly became his friend and knight in shining armor as the two’s friendship slowly blossomed into more. As Cassidy’s hazing and bullying continued, she found solace in her friendship with Gideon, and things took a turn freshman year when he kissed her and walked away, never speaking of it again. Cassidy was rightfully confused but didn’t want to lose Gideon.
When Cassidy’s main tormenter, Melanie, went missing, the students began to point fingers at her. Things got tense at school as the investigation continued and eventually came to a close when the police found Melanie’s body. Soon after, Cassidy received a text from an unknown number that said, “So glad we’re in this together.”
We learned that Cassidy had fantasized about killing her tormentor and wrote it in a journal.

Can you guys guess what happened to the journal?

Ding ding ding!
She lost the f*cking notebook.

Naturally, Melanie was killed in the manner that Cassidy had written. Most of the book was about Cassidy and Gideon trying to figure out who killed Melanie and getting the notebook back before the police could get a hold of it. Two red herrings put the plotline on a goose chase before the big reveal.
Turned out that the killer was Asher. He even confessed to setting the fire that killed Cassidy’s best friend. He killed Melanie because she was a bully, and he set that fire because the little girl was going to blame the broken teapot on Cassidy. Asher even purposely made sure he sustained injuries so as not to draw suspicion. Can we pause for a moment and remember that Asher was only a few years older than Cassidy? You know, sometimes I read or watch these stories about killer kids, and it makes me not want to procreate at all.

Asher full-heartedly believed that his sister would be grateful for his actions! I am so sick of male family members thinking they know what’s best.

UGH, anyway, Cassidy came out the final girl, and her brother was arrested after she was able to trap him with the help of her friends. She and Gideon proceeded to have a relationship as Cassidy tried to move on with her life.

Conclusion
Little Creeping Things was an okay listen. It was quick, entertaining, and somewhat suspenseful. This was the second book I’ve read where an older brother went full Norman Bates and killed others for his baby sister and expected gratitude. One too many, if you ask me.
The plot had a decent build-up, lots of plot twists, and framed suspects. Worth the read if you want something to pass the time. If you’ve read Little Creeping Things, leave a comment with your thoughts!
