A Spanish Love Deception was most definitely another BookTok deception. I feel betrayed, bamboozled, and hoodwinked. I don’t mind a fluffy cozy romance, but for the love of all things good and sinful, THIS IS NOT A SPICY NOVEL TF. If I wasn’t misled, I’d have given a better rating.

What The Vibes Are

What It’s About

Catalina Martín desperately needs a date to her sister’s wedding. Especially since her little white lie about her American boyfriend has spiralled out of control. Now everyone she knows—including her ex and his fiancée—will be there and eager to meet him.

She only has four weeks to find someone willing to cross the Atlantic and aid in her deception. New York to Spain is no short flight, and her raucous family won’t be easy to fool.

Enter Aaron Blackford—her tall, handsome, condescending colleague—who surprisingly offers to step in. She’d rather refuse; never has there been a more aggravating, blood-boiling, and insufferable man.

But Catalina is desperate, and as the wedding draws nearer, Aaron looks like her best option. And she begins to realize he might not be as terrible in the real world as he is at the office.

What I thought about it

***MASSIVE Spoilers below

Catalina’s sister is getting married back in Spain, and Lina’s ex, who destroyed her, will be in attendance with his new fiancée. Lina told her overbearing family that she had an American boyfriend as a way to get them to stop pitying her and setting her up on dates.

Overhearing Lina’s conversation with their coworker, Adam, butted in and offered to be her fake boyfriend for the wedding. Adam and Lina’s relationship was strained due to his rebuff of her initial welcome and bubbly personality. Lina had also overheard Adam tell their superior that he refused to work with her. Since then, Lina had given him the ice queen routine.

After she spent the first 200 pages debating whether or not she’d take Adam. Once they got to Spain, things slowly began to spice up.

We learned that Lina’s ex, Daniel, used to be her professor and was approximately ten years older than her. When word of their relationship surfaced, Lina endured sl*t shaming, harassment, and slander. Daniel provided no support and ended up breaking things off due to the backlash. Devastated, Lina jumped at the opportunity to study abroad and start fresh.

Most of the time in Spain was made up of Lina slowly realizing that Adam wasn’t acting. They solidified their relationship and returned home. Before their trip, Adam was promoted to Lina’s boss. They decided to make the most out of the remainder of the weekend back in the city before dealing with work, and went out to dinner. Unfortunately, they were spotted by a coworker, and when Lina returned to work, she was accused of sleeping her way to the top and was berated for it by her peers. This caused Lina to break things off for a little bit.

The story ended with the coworker being fired for harassment, and the couple resumed their relationship.

Conclusion

A Spanish Love Deception was most definitely another BookTok deception. I feel betrayed, bamboozled, and hoodwinked. I don’t mind a fluffy cozy romance, but for the love of all things good and sinful, THIS IS NOT A SPICY NOVEL TF.

If I wasn’t misled and if it hadn’t taken me a millennium to finish this novel, I’d have given it a better rating, but I found it to be an overhyped book. It’s a decent read, just wish it was properly advertised. Anyway, if you’ve read The Spanish Love Deception, leave a comment!
