What The Vibes Are
What It’s About
The scariest school on earth
Is about to experience real fear…
Most schools are about being the best. This school? It’s about being the worst. Calder Academy is where the rogue paranormals go. The ones who break the rules or lose control. And when that happens for vamps, werewolves, witches, and dark fae? It gets pretty freaking scary.
I should know. Because I’m trapped here.
Look, every seventeen-year-old girl thinks their mom is a tyrant. But mine just happens to run Calder Academy, which paints a giant target on my back. The way I make it through these dark halls is by steering clear of the things―and kids―who go bump in the night.
Especially Jude Abernathy-Lee.
But when a freak storm hits our isolated island, I’m stuck without a backup plan. The power is gone. The lights are out. And our worst nightmares are suddenly real―and out for blood.
Now the only way to survive is to align myself with one evil to avoid the other.
And the only thing worse than the idea of getting close to Jude? Secretly loving every minute of it.

What I thought about it
***Possible Spoilers below
Sweet Nightmare’s plot and lore were interesting… Think The Originals meets The Shadow Court of ACOTAR. It left so many unanswered questions! It is a series, so fortunately, that’s not a con of this book. What happened to Clementine’s mother? How is Henri? Why was he imprisoned? I’m ready for book 2, please.

One thing I liked was the mafia twist! Now, this wasn’t the first time I’ve read something with the paranormal mafia trope, albeit it being the first time the mafia characters are Fae – they’re usually shifters or vampires. Although this was a minor subplot in the novel. Since we’re on the topic of mafia, I am so enraged at the headmistress’s use of Jude’s powers and how she isn’t Clementine’s real mother. HUGE Mother Gothel vibes. What I don’t understand is why she kept Clementine on the island, forbidding her to leave. I understand that it was due to her parentage and what that meant for her powers… but either I missed it or they just never elaborated on what that meant. What power could a Manticore and an Oracle hybrid possibly possess that her “family” would keep her isolated on an island in the Gulf of Mexico? I hope the next book puts all this into perspective.
The vibe of the book was very nostalgic to my former addiction to teen shows about paranormals. The mix of paranormals and creatures was entertaining and caused enough friction among the students to incite a healthy dose of drama. This kept the novel’s pace steady as the mystery and action of the story unraveled.
Conclusion
Overall, Sweet Nightmare was quite enjoyable and helped the time pass. I recommend it to lovers of all things paranormal. Speaking of which… Do you love shadow daddies? Forbidden love and covert conspiracies? Babe, me too! Which is why you need to read it so we can talk about it! If you’ve read Sweet Nightmare, write a comment with your thoughts. What did you think of the lore and plot? How about the character and story development? Can’t wait to hear from you!
